Determining Which County Filed the Case

The county that handles a criminal case from Hoffman Estates depends on where the incident happened, not where the defendant lives. Most of Hoffman Estates is in Cook County. A smaller western section falls within Kane County. If the alleged offense occurred in the Cook County portion, the case goes to Cook County Circuit Court. If it happened in the Kane County portion, it goes to Kane County Circuit Court in St. Charles.

This distinction matters a lot because the two counties have very different online access options. Kane County cases can be searched online for free through Judici and re:SearchIL. Cook County criminal records are not available online at all and require an in-person visit to a courthouse. Before you search anywhere, try to determine which county the incident falls in. The Hoffman Estates Police Department can help clarify which jurisdiction handled a specific incident if you are unsure.

Cook County Circuit Court - In-Person Only

Cook County Circuit Clerk Mariyana T. Spyropoulos oversees the largest court system in the state. The main office is at 50 W. Washington, Suite 1001, Chicago, IL 60602. Phone: 312/603-5030. The website is at cookcountyclerkofcourt.org.

Cook County does not offer online access to criminal records. This applies to all Cook County criminal cases including those from Hoffman Estates. If the case was filed in Cook County, you need to go to a courthouse in person. The courthouse for the northwest suburban area of Cook County, which includes Hoffman Estates, is the Rolling Meadows Courthouse at 2121 Euclid Ave., Rolling Meadows, IL 60008. That is the 3rd Municipal District courthouse and handles criminal matters from the northwest suburbs.

When you visit, bring the defendant's full name and any case number you have. Clerk staff can pull up the case and provide copies at the standard per-page rate. Under 705 ILCS 105, court records are public, and the clerk is required to give access to non-sealed files. Call 312/603-5030 first to confirm hours and which specific courthouse has the file you need.

Kane County Circuit Court - Online Access Available

If the Hoffman Estates case was filed in Kane County, the Circuit Clerk is Theresa Barreiro. The office is at 540 S. Randall Rd., St. Charles, IL 60174. Phone: 630/232-3413. Kane County uses Judici.com for public online case access.

The screenshot below shows the Judici platform, which Kane County and 81 other Illinois counties use to provide free public access to criminal and civil case records.

Judici third-party court records database for Illinois counties

On Judici, select Kane County, enter the name or case number, and review the results. You can see charges, court dates, and the case outcome without any login or fee. Kane County cases are also in re:SearchIL, the statewide portal that became free on May 1, 2025. Either tool works for Kane County searches. If you find nothing on Judici for a Hoffman Estates case, try searching Cook County in person before concluding the record does not exist.

What Criminal Court Records Contain

A criminal court file from either Cook or Kane County typically includes the same core components. You will find the charging document (complaint, indictment, or information), the defendant's name and date of birth, all charges with Illinois statute citations, every scheduled court date, motions and responses, the plea or verdict, and the sentence if the case was concluded. These documents form the official record of what happened in court from start to finish.

Not all records are public. Juvenile cases are confidential. Records that have been sealed by court order do not appear in a public search. Expunged records are removed from the index. If a search returns nothing, those are reasons it might happen beyond the case simply not existing. It is also possible the record is in a different county than you searched, which is a real risk given Hoffman Estates's county split.

Under 20 ILCS 2635, the Unified Crime Information Act sets out how conviction records are collected and maintained at the state level, and how errors in those records can be corrected.

Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification

The ISP Bureau of Identification holds statewide criminal history records and is a good backup option when county-level access is limited. The BOI is at 260 N. Chicago Street, Joliet, IL 60432. Phone: 815/740-5160. More details are at isp.illinois.gov/BureauOfIdentification.

For Hoffman Estates cases that resulted in a conviction, a record may appear in an ISP name-based check regardless of which county filed the case. Name-based checks are open to the public and free of charge for basic inquiries. Fingerprint-based checks are more complete and are used when a thorough background check is needed for official purposes. Both services are processed through the BOI office in Joliet.

Re:SearchIL Statewide Portal

Re:SearchIL is the Illinois courts' free statewide records system. It has been available at no charge since May 1, 2025. Kane County is included in the system, which means Hoffman Estates cases from the Kane County portion can be found there.

The screenshot below shows the re:SearchIL portal, which aggregates court records from across Illinois.

re:SearchIL statewide court records search portal

Remember that Cook County criminal cases are not in re:SearchIL's public search. If the Hoffman Estates case was filed in Cook County, re:SearchIL will not return results for it. For Cook County cases, the only public access option is in-person at the courthouse. Re:SearchIL is still worth checking if you are not sure which county filed the case, since a result in Kane County confirms where the file sits, and no result might point you toward Cook County instead.
