Find Criminal Court Records in Elgin
Elgin criminal court records are split between two county court systems because the city straddles Kane County and Cook County. Most of Elgin falls in Kane County, where records are available online through Judici and re:SearchIL. The Cook County portion is different: criminal records there are not available online and require an in-person visit to the courthouse. This page covers how to find the right clerk, search online where possible, and get records from both counties for Elgin cases.
Elgin Criminal Court Records Quick Facts
How to Search Elgin Criminal Court Records
The first step is determining which county handled the case. This depends on where in Elgin the incident occurred. Most of the city is in Kane County. The Kane County Circuit Court is in St. Charles, and its records are fully searchable online. A smaller section of Elgin falls in Cook County, where criminal records are not available online at all.
For Kane County cases, start with Judici. Judici covers 82 of Illinois's 102 counties and lets you search by name or case number at no cost. The screenshot below shows what the Judici platform looks like.
re:SearchIL, the state's official court records portal launched May 1, 2025, is another free option for Kane County cases. The screenshot below shows the re:SearchIL search interface.
If the case involves the Cook County portion of Elgin, online access is not available. You must contact the Cook County Circuit Clerk or visit the appropriate Cook County courthouse in person.

What Elgin Criminal Court Records Contain
A criminal court file for an Elgin case includes the charging document, which lists the specific charges and statutes cited. It also contains the defendant's name and date of birth, the case number, the full docket of hearings and orders, and any motions filed by both sides. Plea agreements, trial verdicts, and sentencing orders are all part of the file once the case resolves.
Sealed and expunged records are not visible in a public search. Illinois allows eligible defendants to petition for sealing or expungement after a case ends. Once granted, those records are removed from the public index. Juvenile records are confidential by law. If an online search returns no result, the case may be sealed, or it may be in the other county. Check both Kane and Cook before concluding a record does not exist.
