Berwyn Criminal Court Records Quick Facts
How Criminal Cases Work in Berwyn
Berwyn sits in Cook County, close to the western edge of the county. All criminal cases filed for incidents in Berwyn go through the Cook County Circuit Court. The Circuit Court processes felonies, misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and local ordinance violations for the entire county.
Cook County does not use re:SearchIL or Judici for criminal records. You cannot search Berwyn criminal cases online through any state system. The only way to look up or get copies of a Cook County criminal case is to visit a courthouse in person. This applies to everyone, whether you are an attorney, a researcher, or a member of the public.
Berwyn is in the west suburban district of Cook County. Criminal cases from the area may be heard at the Maywood Courthouse, which serves the west suburban area at 1500 S. Maybrook Dr., Maywood, IL 60153. Some cases may also go through the main courthouse at 50 W. Washington St. in Chicago. Call the clerk's office before you visit to confirm which location has the case file you need.

Cook County Circuit Court Clerk
Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Mariyana T. Spyropoulos oversees all criminal and civil court records for the county. Her office handles filings, maintains case records, and processes public record requests.
- Main Office: 50 W. Washington St., Suite 1001, Chicago, IL 60602
- Phone: 312/603-5030
- Website: cookcountyclerkofcourt.org
- Maywood Courthouse: 1500 S. Maybrook Dr., Maywood, IL 60153
Offices are open Monday through Friday. Typical hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Verify hours before you go, as they are subject to change. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. A case number speeds up the process. If you do not have one, a name search is possible at the counter, but it may take more time.
There is a fee for printed copies of court records. Certified copies cost more and are typically needed for legal proceedings. Ask the clerk about accepted payment methods at the specific courthouse you visit, since policies can differ by location.
Public Access Terminals
Each Cook County courthouse has public access terminals available in the clerk's office. They are free to use and open to any member of the public. No appointment is required.
The terminals let you search the case index by name or case number. Once you locate a case, you can view the docket, which is a log of every event and filing in the case. The terminal shows charge descriptions, court dates, and case status or disposition. This is enough information for most basic lookups.
Not all courthouses display full document images on the terminal. For copies of specific filings, such as charging documents or sentencing orders, you need to ask staff. There is a per-page cost for printed copies. Certified copies are available at a higher rate. Bring enough to cover the cost, and ask what forms of payment are accepted.
If you are looking up a common name, be prepared for multiple results. Having the defendant's date of birth or approximate year of filing will help narrow the search. Plan to allow extra time if you are unsure of the case details.
What the Records Contain
A criminal case file for a Berwyn case will include the charging document, all motions and orders filed, and the case disposition. The file is specific to one case only. It is not a full criminal history.
The charging document may be a misdemeanor complaint, a felony information, or an indictment. It names the defendant, states the charges, and cites the statute or ordinance. Orders in the file show how the case moved through court: continuances, rulings on motions, and any pretrial decisions. If the case ended with a plea deal, the agreement and sentencing order are included. If it went to trial, the verdict and any sentencing documents are in the file as well.
You can also see whether the case ended in a lesser outcome, such as court supervision. Supervision is a disposition where no conviction is entered if the person meets certain conditions during a set period. It still appears in the court file but differs from a full conviction.
Sealed and expunged records are not accessible. Juvenile court files are closed to the public. If a record falls into either category, you may be told the record is not available but not told why. The rules for court record access are outlined in 705 ILCS 105, the Circuit Court Clerk Act.
Statewide Criminal History: ISP Bureau of Identification
A single case file only covers one matter. If you need to know about all of a person's criminal cases across Illinois, you need to contact the Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification. The ISP BOI maintains the official statewide criminal history database.
Location: 260 N. Chicago St., Joliet, IL 60432. Phone: 815/740-5160. Requests can be submitted online through the ISP website or by mail. Fees apply and depend on the type of request and how it is submitted. Processing times vary from a few days to several weeks.
Individuals can request their own criminal history. Authorized entities, such as employers and licensing agencies with legal authorization, can also run checks through the state's approved channels. The ISP report pulls from all counties in Illinois. It is more complete than any single courthouse search because it covers the whole state.
The Criminal Identification Act at 20 ILCS 2635 governs the ISP database, expungement eligibility, and record sealing procedures in Illinois.
